The Research Committee is a group of Society members with academic backgrounds, which carries out its business primarily by email. The Committee is chaired by Dr. Chris Gleed-Owen, and currently comprises Professor Trevor Beebee, Dr. Richard Griffiths, Dr. John Wilkinson and Dr. Wolfgang Wüster.

Joint Scientific Meeting

Every year, the BHS Research Committee runs a one-day conference in conjunction with the Herpetological Conservation Trust in Bournemouth. The Joint Scientific Meeting is held on a weekend in early December at the fascinating Victorian premises of the Bournemouth Natural Science Society. Registration is open to all, and is always excellent value for a full day of quality speakers, buffet lunch, teas and coffees. Generous tea breaks and lunch breaks give plenty of time to catch up with old friends and make new ones. The venue is close to Bournemouth’s cliffs, and with the south coast temperate climate, makes for a pleasant stroll. In 2008, delegates even managed to spot a few introduced wall lizards during the lunch break! To find out more, look out for flyers later in the year from September onwards. To register or to offer a presentation, contact John Wilkinson at the Herpetological Conservation Trust. johnw.wilkinson@herpconstrust.org.uk

  Student Grant Scheme

The British Herpetological Society welcomes applications on an annual basis for its Student Grant Scheme. The scheme offers small grants, normally not exceeding £300, principally aimed at supporting fieldwork and costs associated with BSc and MSc projects. It is intended to promote interest in herpetology through short, well-defined research programmes with clear aims and useful applications. The work must take place during the year of application. PhD projects will not normally be eligible. Priority may be given to BHS members, but the scheme is open to all. The scientific scope and ethical standards of projects should be consistent with the aims of the Society. The scheme is administered by the BHS Research Committee Chairman, Dr Chris Gleed-Owen. Applications should be in the form of a letter or email setting out the following:

  1. Your name, address, telephone, email
  2. Course, stage, institution
  3. Project title
  4. Brief outline of the project's:
  Aims/rationale
  Proposed methodology
  Timescale
  Planned expenditure
Details of any funds sought from other sources
  5. Previous experience and/or interest in herpetology
  6. A letter or email of support from your supervisor

Note that work on protected species may need a licence, and permission is generally required to work on land, whether public or private. A copy of the resulting dissertation must be submitted by 1 May the following year, to inform the Society of the results of the work. The financial support of the BHS must be acknowledged. Any intellectual property acquired will remain with the recipient, but the Society must be permitted to publish a summary or abstract in one of its publications.
